Automating processes enables business agility and digitalization. But there are so many ways to automate processes. Developers could use workflow engines, event-driven choreographies, batch jobs, or other possibilities. And there are also low code tools, such as robotic process automation (RPA), which are a big hype. You need to understand the tooling landscape in order to select the right kind of tool for your problem.
This talk will introduce the process automation map. This map will help you categorize the type of process you want to automate, which in turn will help you identify which tool categories are interesting to look at. As part of this, I will walk you through the highs and lows of various tool categories using practical examples.
Afterward, you are enabled to make better architecture and tool stack decisions – aside from opinionated conceptions that „nobody needs developers anymore“ or that „low code is nonsense and can never work“.

Ich entwickle seit über 15 Jahren Software und habe zahlreichen Kunden dabei geholfen, Kernprozesse zu automatisieren, so z.B. der Bestellprozesse bei Zalando, Auftragsprozesse bei T-Mobile oder Patenanträge in der Schweiz. Ich habe aktiv an der Entwicklung verschiedener Open Source Workflow Engines mitgearbeitet und bin Mitgründer der Camunda, ein Open Source Unternehmen das Prozessautomatisierung neu erfindet. Ich bin Autor von „Practical Process Automation“ und Co-Autor des „Praxishandbuch BPMN“, spreche regelmäßig auf Konferenzen und schreibe für verschiedene Magazine.
